The problems with the Transport for London franchise held by Metronet, leaves the Underground in uncharted waters. Although Metronet is in administration, and their directors and senior managers are still in post, the general wisdom is that the companay is unlikely to survive. The mayor will have to make a decision about whether to bring anothe rprivate group (something that goes against his principles) or to take direct control of the 'franchise'. This could mean that part of the Underground and staff will be under private hands (Tube Lines), while the rest will be in the public sector. A significant headache for the mayor, especially when it comes negotiating agreements that impact on staff condiditons of service. Critically, the mayor must make the right decision and fast, given that the Olympic games in 2012 are less than fives years away, and there is still so much to done on improving the network.
